Haunted Houses In America
Let’s face it, haunted houses (particularly in America) draw large numbers of tourists for people who seem to be fascinated by the paranormal or supernatural. Nowadays haunted houses can serve as exhibits or museums if you will where patrons can view many interesting collectibles and learn its colorful history. Halloween is the obvious choice for viewing but many of these places are open during the entire year. Let’s see what sort of haunted houses, America has to offer.
Lemp Mansion in Saint Louis, Missouri
This haunted house was constructed sometime during the 1860′s. It is near the top of list of haunted houses in the United States. William Lemp owned this mansion and tragedy first struck this family when his son passed away due to a heart attack. His father was so overcome with grief that he ended up taking his own life just a few years after. Shockingly enough, Lemp’s two other sons, committed suicide as well. It is not surprising that paranormal activity has taken place here such as apparitions, spots that are cold and people speaking. Currently this haunted house is an inn and restaurant.
The Old Slave House in Junction, Illinois
John Crenshaw once lived in this haunted house and had a slave business that was prohibited during this time. The slaves here went through much suffering at the hands of Crenshaw. They were hit and were restrained with a chain. Crenshaw later passed away in the early 1870′s. Thirty years later, this haunted house became a museum. If ever there was a place where spirits are unsettled, the Old Slave House is definitely that place. Odd noises can be heard near the attic. There sounds appear as if someone is crying. Chains can also be heard.
LaLaurie House in New Orleans, Louisana
Finally on my list of haunted houses in America is the LaLaurie House which is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is another case of severe mistreatment of slaves. In 1832, the mansion was purchased by Dr. LaLaurie. The doctor and his wife owned a number of slaves. Soon, neighbors had taken note that many of the slaves they purchased would disappear with no explanation. A few years later there was a fire and it was soon discovered the terrible conditions that the slaves were kept in. They were caged, chained and had been hit repeatedly. The people of New Orleans were so outraged, the doctor and his wife packed up and left. Odd occurrences have happened here such as apparitions manifesting, strange liquid appearing out of nowhere and distressed wails have been heard. For all you movie buffs, on an interesting side note, the actor, Nicolas Cage owned the residence in 2007 and paid 3.5 million dollars for it!
