Haunted Horror Films of 2008 Part One

Several scary haunted horror films graced thousands of screens across the United States in 2008. It is a genre that is back and stronger than ever much to the delight of horror fans all over. I will be going over some of these films here, listing their plots and stars. Some you might have heard of, others you probably have not. There is bound to be a few that will want you to keep your lights and the doors locked at night.

The Strangers

This haunted horror film stars Scott Speedman (of Felicity fame or for movie goers, Underworld fame) and the lovely Liv Tyler. It starts out as a rather typical young couple who decide to stay at a vacation house that is quite isolated to say the least. Shortly after they are terrorized beyond belief by three assailants who are covered by masks. Bryan Bertino, the film’s writer and director claims that The Strangers was inspired by true events.

Stuck

Another great haunted horror film that you might want to catch stars Mena Suvari as well as Stephen Rea. This thriller’s release was limited in the United States and the inspiration for the film was based on a true story. Mena’s character, Chante Jawan Mallard hits a homeless man and becomes stuck (hence the title) in the car’s windshield. Rather than going for help, the character hopes the problem will solve itself on its own. See what happens when you don’t take care of a problem.

Funny Games

This remake is based an Austrian 1997 film of the same name and stars the talented Naomi Watts along with Tim Roth. Funny Games opened in March of 2008. This haunted horror films revolves around a family spending time at their vacation home. Shortly after arriving they receive a visit from their young neighbors. What turns out to be an innocent visit is actually the family’s worst nightmare. The family is forced to take on games of the sadistic nature if they ever want to see the light of day again.
